Program Note:
A “scirocco” is a warm or hot wind, originating in North Africa and moving over the Mediterranean. It comes from the Arabian or Sahara desert, and mixes with cooler air, with a counter-clockwise motion that sends it across the southern coasts of Europe. My piece was inspired by images of this whirling wind. It was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, pianist Mary Kathleen Ernst. –JS
