Kassia Ensemble Commissions Kassia’s Song

The outstanding Kassia ensemble has commissioned me to compose Kassia’s Song, the first piece composed for their entire sparkling ensemble of clarinet, harp and string quintet! I am especially excited to create this piece inspired by the historical Kassia, the 9th-century Abbess, poet and hymnographer, the only woman whose hymns are included in the Eastern Orthodox Church liturgy, and the first woman whose music has survived until now! I will build this piece from rhythmic motives from readings of her poetry in the original Greek, and will incorporate fragments of her captivating music. This ensemble affords a wealth of timbral beauty, and it promises to be a wonderful collaboration. Stay tuned for the premiere date!
