Program Note:
Shapirit Y’fehfiah (Beautiful Dragonfly), is a setting of the lighthearted Hebrew poem of that name by Israeli poet Mira Meir. The beautiful dragonfly looks at herself in a pool of water, and preens, thinking none is more beautiful than she. After wondering what to wear in the evening, she dips her wings, making them glow, then darts away. I was drawn to the lively rhythms and colorful language and composed this piece for treble chorus while in residence at Mishkan Amanim, an artist colony in Herzliah. I would like to thank the Herzliya Conservatory for their kind hospitality during my stay, and Ms. Meir and ACUM for permission to use her text. –JS
